Leopard surpasses Windows in the Japanese retail OS market

December 11, 2007 6:38 PM

According to a blog entry "Japanese news go to the world ...[jp]":

It is rare to see a story on Japanese Mac market appears in English media, but recently, a news was widely reported in English Mac media (Macworld, MacNN, Ars Technica, HardMac).

The news was: "Apple's new Leopard OS makes strong debut in Japan taking 53.9 percent of the market in October [jp]".

"Just within six days after the launch, Leopard took up 53.9 percent of the Japanese market, accounting for over half of the sales of packaged OS in October". Amazingly good start.

Yes, it might be because the OS was just being released, but the number indicates that many Mac users did rush to the stores to get their Leopard.

Such favorable sales seems to be a global phenomenon. The Apple headquarters has announced that more than two million copies were sold worldwide in the first weekend after the launch. For the moment, Leopard is selling at a much higher pace than Tiger, the previous version of Mac OS, which was the most successful OS release in Apple's history.
I'm curious to see whether they can sustain the current strong sales or not.
