As reported here [Japanese site]:
Sources learned on July 19 that 24-year-old singer Utada Hikaru's "Flavor Of Life", first released in February 2007, was downloaded more than 7 million times to date, making it the most downloaded song in the world.
Utada Hikaru's "Flavor Of Life" made a world-record 7 million downloads and became the most downloaded song in the world. Amazing.
The news also reported that "with physical CD singles combined, more than 7.7 million units have been released so far", meaning that the download number is ten times more than the number of the singles shipped so far.
Maybe people start feeling that downloading a song via mobile phone etc is easier than buying a physical CD?
